Is that the most idiotic title you’ve ever seen on a blog post? What “pros” can there possibly be to being diagnosed with age-related infertility or any other kind of infertility for that matter?

Surrogacy: The Pearl in My Oyster? by my guest Sarah-Jayne DuryeaFeatured

Hi Friends!

This week I have another fabulous guest. I absolutely love her style of writing and I’m sure there’s something in here that you can relate to! Here’s SJ…

Behold the humble question mark. It looks suspiciously like a lightbulb that some tired graphic designer hasn’t yet finished. Incomplete, just like me. I’ve spent years working in private practice as a Psychologist, gladly helping people to solve their problems and to reach the holy grail of happiness. The unwritten rules about being a therapist are as follows.   Have an answer for everything (not everything actually has an answer – go figure) and never focus on yourself. Well, by the time I actually got round to me, it was much, much too late. I’ve spent years talking about gratitude and how to capture the happiness butterfly. Lecturing on the finer details of how going the distance is your best friend and that anything is possible if you just keep trying.

But guess what? It turns out that my life isn’t perfect, in fact, the thing I want most in the world I can’t have. At 41 years of age, I am a card carrying reproductively challenged individual or to put it another way, my bits don’t work properly. There: I’ve said it. Did the sky fall in? Nah.Continue reading

Guest Blog by Tiffany Jo Baker – He said, she said. 2 Versions of the Same Fertility Journey & How to Deal!Featured

Hi Friends!

It is my great pleasure to feature a wonderful writer, couples life & fertility couch and surrogate – not once, not twice but three times a surrogate! What a beautiful soul! I’m sure you will enjoy her message as much as I have. Here’s Tiffany…

Without a doubt, most people marry someone who is the polar opposite of them in many ways and areas. I have worked with a lot of couples and time after time, conflict arises from those differences.  What is almost humorous about this is that often times it was those “differences” that first attracted us to them.Continue reading

Change your Mindset to Achieve Fertility Success, by Fertility Coach, Rosanne Austin

Hi Friends!

I am so excited that one of the MOST AMAZING souls I have had the pleasure to know and to work with, has honoured me by being my guest blogger today :).

The one and only, beautiful Rosanne Austin came into my life at a time when I needed saving from the gremlins in my head telling me that my life was not worth much if I couldn’t fall pregnant and be a mother.  Rosanne helped me to embrace the hero within myself and operate from a place of empowerment, writing my own happy story, instead of being a victim oppressed by infertility.

Due to Rosanne’s non-judgemental, loving and gentle encouragement, I was able to equip myself with tools that I can use any day, any time for any challenging situation and rise from worrisome victim to WARRIOR Mother-to-be. I truly believe that my miracles began and the universe opened up it’s blessings to me as soon as I began to open up to the many possibilities that my life could be through Rosanne’s help and direction!

And I am particularly jumping up and down with excitement because this lovely lady walked her own talk all the way from Maybe to DEFINITE Baby, coming soon 😉 Continue reading

8 Ways to Re-connect With Yourself During Your Fertility Journey, by my guest, Karen Humphries

Hi Friends,

I hope everyone is having a good week and your 2017 is taking off in all sorts of good ways.

Today I have an incredible and inspirational, Wonder Woman, who I have the privilege of calling a close friend – Women’s Wellness Mentor, Author and Creative Spirit, the beautiful Karen Humphries of Colours of the Goddess.

In her own words, Karen’s mission…

“…is to both Empower and Awaken the modern spirited woman. I use the tried and trusted principles of Colour, Angel and Relaxation therapies and also Chakra and Crystal healing to help you keep your Mind, Body and Spirit well!

My life mantra is “Out of darkness comes colour” So, today I would love to help you with that as well

Infertility as we know can be a roller-coaster ride. What should be a magical union can turn out to be a really hard and trying journey. Having been on the roller coaster myself for the past five years, I know all about its ups and downs and unexpected turns and heartaches. It is a journey where our Mind, Body and Spirit is truly tested and we can feel very disconnected to who we once were.

As a Women’s Wellness Mentor, I am on a mission to help the modern spirited woman be the best version of herself; wherever she is on her life’s journey. I also have personal experience of several unsuccessful rounds of IVF. I first had to face never having children when I was seriously ill between the ages of 23-36. So my qualifications and life experience are a perfect marriage to help others.

I cannot predict the future, for you or myself. But I can teach you techniques that will help to bring you back to the NOW.

I believe that we need to work on ourselves as a whole, thus working on our Mind, Body and Spirit equally.

Mind

Our mental health is vital to our overall well-being and is all too often neglected especially as we tend to view mental health as something that we don’t have an issue with. This is mostly due to the social stigma attached to it. But with infertility, it brings stress, anxiety and depression of different degrees. Therefore we can’t ignore this important factor, infertility really does affect our mental health and our mind.

Body

We need to keep our bodies as healthy as possible especially as they are being drained by both medications and stress. Again when the stresses of infertility hit, we tend to hibernate and hide away from the world. But this is when we should be getting out and going to a yoga class, or going for a mindful walk and reconnect with nature. It is vital that we increase the good hormones.

Spirit

Our spirit, which is very connected to both our mind and our bodies needs to be lovingly nurtured. It is like a plant and the water that we give it to keep it living is its nectar, without each other and their connections the plant won’t survive or thrive. So, nurturing your spirit will keep you balanced.

This whole journey can be like a long cycle in the washing machine only to find out that the spin cycle isn’t working and then to top it off, we are left to drip-dry out in the freezing cold. Each drip draining every fibre out of our beings.

With an open heart and mind, you can explore new ways to heal all three. The methods I use are tried and tested, many of them centuries old. I believe that they show up in our lives when we are ready for them, just like the saying goes:

“When the student is ready, the teacher appears”

Here is an introduction into 8 ways that  you can re-connect with yourself:

1 Affirmations

This is a sure way to start affirming new positive intent into your life. Affirmations are short positive sentences that are repeated to reinforce these messages to our brain, and which have a ripple effect on our Mind, Body and Spirit.

2  Colouring therapy

Colour therapy can really help us to take mindful moments and just be with ourselves and re-connect to our true spirited selves.  I am a huge advocate of this therapy and I have a free mandala for you to try and enjoy expressing yourself. Colouring-in is a mindful and very beneficial pass time and will help relax and change your state whilst going through the feelings and emotions of infertility.

 3 Crystal Healing

Crystals are an awesome way of supporting yourself through this journey – I say that they are a girl’s best friend. Personally, I carry them with me and did so for all my treatments. There are lots of crystals associated and linked to aid and support you in your fertility journey. I have been helping others to use healing based on crystals and colour therapy for many years now and I have seen so many women reap the benefits from them.

 4 Chakra Healing

Chakras are energy centres in our bodies and when our chakras are not working properly it can be because they are either be blocked or over-active which means that our Mind, Body and Spirit is out of tune. Chakras are also interconnected with colour therapy. So when we tune them up, we can feel like we are moving through life at optimal levels. There are many activities that you can learn about to re-tune and heal yourself through utilisation and alignment of and with your chakras.

 5 Journaling

Keeping a journal is an extremely beneficial tool, it helps the internal chatter to be taken out of your inner self and onto paper, which can be known to really help with our stress levels. It is also a reflection of where we are and can help us to better understand just how far we have come. It is a way for you to be able to express all those emotions that you need to get out but do not know how to.

 6 Essential oils

Essential oils can ignite our senses so that we can be in a far greater state of relaxation or vigour.  They can e used in a multitude of ways to help centre yourself again. Smell can evoke many memories and emotions to bring us back to happier times – just the thing we need to experience and be reminded of to help us when we are in a heightened state of stress or anxiety. ***Note*** Always consult your doctor before using essential oils as they can be very potent if not used properly and should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

7 The Art of relaxation

Through getting to know what makes us tick and how we function, we find out what things we like to do; and we learn just how much they can help us beat the stresses of life. This really comes to play when we are experiencing harder times like with what infertility brings us and keep it at bay. Relaxation can greatly reduce our stress levels. Yoga, walking dogs, taking up art are all things that can connect us and help us learn about the art of relaxation. They can help to ground us and help us to cope with difficult experiences.

8 Meditation

Buddhists say that meditation is a natural sleeping pill. It is also a beneficial tool to help us weed our internal gardens. It aids us in the reduction of feeling less stressed, being centred and more grounded. It changes our responses to situations. So it is super special for all those circumstances that do arise with infertility.  It is time that we came back to our true selves so that we can be mindful of our daily actions. It is simple to start.

To find out more about each of these modalities and tools, you can download my FREE 40-page eBook called “The Empowerment Guide for the Spirited Woman, 8 Secrets to Empower your Mind, Body and Spirit in the modern world” and do the exercises set in each chapter.

Some modalities you will find are interlinked with others and some may sit with you more than others. That is ok – there is no right or wrong when it comes to all of this, it is there to help you.

My guide will teach you how to strengthen your self-development and spiritual muscles. So enjoy journeying through each one, from evoking your senses with essential oils, learning about balancing your chakras or getting crystal clear about crystals, calming your mind with meditation or by exploring a world of colour with colouring therapy.

Confucius said. “A Journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step”

So why not try some of these modalities out today and start a journey back to yourself?

On reflection, none of us knows what our future holds, but we can help how we are and how we act in the NOW. We DO have power over the NOW and we can take steps to empower ourselves with the tools that will help us fight and work and befriend any battle or life situation that we find ourselves in. Trust me I know.

You know it’s time to come back and reconnect to who you are! Start walking that new path today!

Really enjoyed this book and very informative without needing a medical degree. Would definitely recommend to anyone going through the ivf system etc

Written from the heart. Raw, relevant and a really great read. Highly recommend

I have been through one round of IVF and I wish I had this book prior. I found great information as I get ready for the next round. IVF is an emotional journey and this book makes it less overwhelming. Thanks Bianca!

Great read! The author is humble, authentic, informative & supportive. She’s walked the road & left no stone unturned. Grateful!

Bianca has put together a comprehensive look at the ins and outs of IVF treatment, from what different treatment options consist of to tips on managing the stress of the process from other IVF veterans. This is truly a guide that can prepare you physically and emotionally for IVF. She’s obviously done extensive research, yet the book is written as if you were having a conversation with your best girlfriend. It’s so easy to read and follow. I also like that it includes resources for more information on various aspects of IVF, including avenues for emotional support, which is so vital for patients on this journey. I didn’t do IVF, and learned a lot from reading this guide at how extensive and intense it can be. I really appreciate Bianca for putting this book together! No One Teaches You How To Fall, by my guest, Fertility Mentor & Strategist, Katie Ryan

Hi Friends!

Hopefully everyone is finally getting into the swing of the new year. Last night/this morning was the incredible full Wolf Moon signalling a time for introspection and self-discovery, letting go of the old and welcoming in the new year with set intentions and action plans to satisfy your hunger for whatever it is you want to achieve this year and beyond.

So, it is only fitting that my guest today calls herself a “…detective and strategist who relieves pressure, restores hope and plots a path to Babytown.”

The beautiful and delightful Katie Ryan, is a Fertility Mentor who uses a natural approach to help individuals or couples discover what the blockages could be in their bodies and minds that are preventing them from conceiving, and assists them to put together a plan of action to bring that baby in.  Here she is with some encouragement for us all…

******************************************************************************************

No One Teaches You How To Fall

For my birthday last year, I decided to pretend I was an adventurous person and I asked for a visit to the local high ropes park, the kind with platforms up in the trees, all joined together by flying foxes and rope ladders.

So hubby and I went off mid-morning and started out with the safety briefing, where you learn how to “hook on” and “hook off”, making sure you’re always connected so you don’t fall to the ground and die right? Fun!

Climbing up a ladder to the first platform in the tree, I’m shaking and feel uncomfortably weak. All my energy has just drained out of me but I’m determined so up that ladder I go.

I get to the first platform with the first flying fox and hook my wheel onto the rope. I’ve got to push myself off the platform out into thin air which sounds pretty simple but it was freaking scary! I made myself do it because we’d only just got there and there was no way I was going to chicken out and go home.

With each obstacle I became slightly less rigid with terror. We went through the first two courses with barely a whimper on my part. By then I was a bit tired and we cleverly hadn’t taken anything with us to eat or drink so we decided to do one more course and go home.

We get halfway through our last course and there are more people around so we’re having to wait longer for each “adventure”. We get to one really, really difficult connection between the trees where there were stirrups hanging on ropes that you’re supposed to walk across.

WTF?!?

I was knackered and I really couldn’t do it but I tried.

And I fell.

My legs gave way, my arms couldn’t hold me and I was caught by the security ropes. I didn’t fall very far but there was that moment where I remember looking at the ground and thinking “Am I going to hit that?”

I was terrified. I let out a little scream when the safety harness yanked me upwards and I remember looking up at my husband, feeling kind of cranky about all this trauma I was going through, and I said to him

“They don’t teach you how to fall!”

I meant that the safety briefing at the start, they don’t teach you how to fall.

He just gave me this look that was so meaningful and I heard what I just said: they don’t teach you how to fall.

No one teaches you how to fall, how to recover from a negative test or deal with a chest-crushing diagnosis about your body. You learn that as you go.

Then you have to learn how to pick yourself back up and hopefully you’re lucky enough to have someone like my husband who helped haul me across to the next tree platform and made sure I got off safely.

I came home and got straight in the bath because my body was aching. I stayed in the bath for a long time, crying and eating an entire block of chocolate because it was all my traumatised self was capable of.

In that moment, I made the decision there would be no more adventurous things in my life, no more risks or fearful uncertainty.

Who was I kidding?

You can’t avoid risk and pain and hurt, and you don’t need to know how to fall. You just need to know that you’re capable of getting back up.

There’s always someone to help you, even if that someone is you.

So keep that in mind if this month doesn’t go your way.

You don’t need to know how to fall, you just need to know that you can get back up again.

And you will.

How Heavy Metals Are Sabotaging Your Fertility by my guest, Natural Fertility Expert, Gabriela Rosa

Hey Friends!

Hopefully everyone’s holiday season has been good or at least not too bad. I know from my side it’s been A LOT of indulging in all sorts of yummy, ‘feel-good-at-the-time’ stuff but that make me feel all kinds of guilty afterward for putting my body (and our bank balance) through all that! It is holiday season and sometimes we need to let our hair down and just let go…as long as we don’t dwell too long at that unhealthy place instead of getting back to reality…especially if you are on a fertility road.

It should be no secret, that what we eat can have a significant impact on our fertility , especially for couples already struggling to conceive or hold on to a pregnancy. However, many people do not realise that dangerous toxins present not only in our food, but in nearly every product that we come into contact with on a daily basis in seemingly harmless items can affect out fertility in major ways.  This is not only true for eggs, womb and feminine hormones but it is also true for male hormones and sperm.

As most of you know,  Vinny and I decided to follow the surrogacy route to create our family, but in order to make sure that he could give us the best chance possible, he decided to go on a ‘sperm-improving’ lifestyle change – no sugar, no wheat, no dairy, no processed foods,  no GMO’s, no tap water but also no plastics, no toxic cleaning products, no toxic cookware, no toxic toiletries and generally cutting out as many toxins in our day-to-day lives.  Almost three months later, his sperm tests proved that his lifestyle change had in fact helped those swimmers tremendously and a few weeks after that, even better proof was the fact that our surrogate became pregnant first time with his and my donor’s embryos.

So, this brings me to my guest, Gabriela Rosa, who explains how heavy metals could be preventing you from taking home a healthy baby.

Gabriela Rosa (MScM (RHHG), BHSc, ND, Post Grad NFM, DBM, Dip Nut, MATMS, MNHAA) is a fertility specialist, author (of 3 books on natural fertility) and founder of the first world class, fully virtual fertility practice, which supports patients from all over the globe to overcome infertility and recurrent miscarriage, even when other treatments have failed. Gabriela is known for bringing together the best of both worlds in fertility treatment—integrating holistic, evidence based science and medicine to help couples, who wish to overcome infertility and miscarriage to create healthy babies.

So, get a cuppa or two and read this article a few times to let it sink in and then make plans to apply a healthy change to your life…I hand you over to Gabriela…

“Much like the sun, heavy metals are a natural and necessary part of life here on planet earth however overexposure can be fatal.

Poisonous to our fertility in even the smallest of quantities – heavy metals such as Aluminium, Arsenic, Cadmium, Copper, Iron, Lead, Mercury and Nickel are all naturally occurring elements. They have always been present in our environment and throughout the ages would have entered our food and water supply during rain which breaks down the soil, releasing heavy metals into our streams, lakes, rivers, and groundwater.

The presence of heavy metals in our day to day life is not new, it is simply more present than ever before.  The danger for your fertility is that heavy metals are found in all too many, common household items – from mascaras, hair dyes and contact lens solutions to, stainless steel cookware, iron cookware, ceramics and tools. The list for exposure runs into the hundreds and unless a conscious effort is made to identify and remove them from your personal environment there is little chance of escaping exposure.

So my point is this…We need to recognise that exposure to most heavy metals stems from the choices we make when buying medicine, food, household and personal products. Once you can identify the danger, you can reduce your risk by immediately cleaning up your personal environment and then – moving forward – by making, better informed, purchase decisions.

But how do these impact fertility?

When heavy metals enter your system they are immediately absorbed and due to their high toxic potential are quickly stored away in tissue such as the brain, liver, kidneys and bones so as to prevent immediate harm. Because heavy metals are not easily metabolized or excreted they tend to bioaccumulate, causing metabolic disruptions which can lead to infertility, poor sperm parameters and miscarriages.

Researchers believe a lot of the damage caused to developing babies and children due to heavy metals exposure begins and happens in utero. Heavy metals have also been linked to malformation and abnormalities in the foetus as well as developmental concerns including autism in children whose parents, particularly the mother, had high heavy metal loads during pregnancy.

Testing for Heavy Metals in the Body

Most people will have heavy metals stored within their bodies. The process of heavy metal testing is complex, with treatment often increasing the length of preconception preparation by many months. While some experts argue that heavy metals in deep storage, are fine to leave there, other experts strongly oppose this view. They agree though, that if you undergo treatment such as chelation therapy to remove heavy metals from your body you MUST NOT attempt to conceive for at least 4 months after the treatment has finished.

If a couple has been trying to conceive for more than one year without success, despite there being no other reason for infertility and/or experienced multiple miscarriages,  my recommendation is for comprehensive fertility testing. There are at least 50 parameters or tests that may need to be performed for a couple experiencing fertility problems in order to rule out and identify possible reasons for infertility. If we do find heavy metals, I recommend chelation therapy as a part of natural fertility treatment, unless a woman is over the age of 40.

Once you understand the impact of heavy metals on health and fertility, ultimately only you can make the final decision on whether to address this issue or not. For best results be sure to seek professional advice from a practitioner who understands and specializes in the treatment of heavy metal toxicity for insight on your individual circumstances.

-Gabriela Rosa

Gabriela kindly holds a regular, free 14-day natural fertility challenge on Facebook, in which she discusses this topic and many other factors that can impact your fertility health. During this challenge, you will be introduced to healthy food, cookware, cleaning, toiletry and environment alternatives to replace the current toxic ones you are most probably using. Each day, through videos, written notes, personal messages and group discussions, Gabriela will educate you on important fertility-related topics, walk you through her FERTILE methodology as well as her 11 Pillars of Fertility, set an exciting task for you to do that will get you one step closer to ‘cleaning up’ your fertility and give out awesome prizes!

I have personally done this 14-day challenge and can honestly say that it was an amazing experience in so many ways. It was educational and inspiring and was the basis for my hubby agreeing to change his lifestyle to improve those swimmers. Gabriela herself is a loving, warm, generous and simply wonderful person who you will fall in love with from day one.

So give yourself and your fertility a fantastic start to the new year and a new (fertile) you, by joining the next challenge on Sunday 8 January 2017. Register now to join the next Challenge. It could just be the most important 2 weeks of your 2017!
